People say that Christmas is a time for miracles, cheer and goodwill towards all, and the holiday spirit certainly seem to have affected certain traditionalist British lawmakers. In an unusual twist as former Conservative Party member Peter Lilley is one of the politicians to advocate liberalizing cannabis laws in the UK. Like some conservative politicians in other countries Lilley has noted that he and his Tory fellows should consider change their stance on the issue of cannabis prohibition and would help them and their fellows garner needed votes in the coming General Election.

.
In fact, Lilley has gone so far as to advocate for a policy which would allow cannabis to be personally grown, purchased, and consumed by those over the age of eighteen, though with additional restrictions placed use on public places, as well as a limit to how much one can be sold by distributors. Furthermore, like tobacco, cannabis would be taxed and labeled with a health warning.
“On crime and asylum-seekers as well as drugs, Conservatism seemed to be about locking people up,” Lilley wrote in the Daily Telegraph. “It ought to be about setting people free. Nothing could more vividly dramatize reaffirmation of our belief in freedom and personal responsibility than to move clearly in favour of liberalizing the law on cannabis.”

.
Apparently in support of Lilley’s position shadow chancellor Michael Portillo, in a BBC1 interview, stated that the Conservative Party would be ready for a debate surrounding the issue of cannabis legalization under his leadership. However, it remains to be seen the entirety of the rest of the party will respond to such a debate.

.
Taking the contrary position one such member, Ann Widdecombe, has repeated the party’s resistance to such a change, and stated that the Conservative Party is still opposed to legalization or even decriminalization. She’s also continued to use the tired, fear-mongering tactic that cannabis is a gateway drug and that legalization would inevitably to cannabis dealers selling harder and harder drugs, and too much younger persons.

That said even if the Tory’s don’t change their position it could prompt the Labour or Lib Dems to take an even bolder stance towards marijuana reform to outcompete the Conservatives for votes next election. In either event this would be great news for Britain’s, particularly those who use marijuana and have to endure the UK’s anti-cannabis policies.
