Cannabis is taken from buds and leaves of plants classified as cannabis sativa or cannabis indica. It’s extensively popular due to its consumption, which results in an out-of-the-body experience and ‘high’ feeling.
Although classified as a narcotics product in most countries, it’s still very popular and always in good demand. New regulations in 21st century have forced governments to move beyond the stereotypes associated with this plant and regulation, which in turn results in experimentation for medical purposes.
Great many positive effects have been found about cannabis, also known as marijuana, but critics still are not ready to accept and separate it from hard drugs such as heroin and cocaine often misinterpreting their side effects and associating them with marijuana. Here are some reasons why cannabis products are very useful for medicinal purposes, thus proving to be valid reasons to legalize this curative drug.
Seizures
For seizures, cannabis is used as a muscle relaxant as it has ‘antispasmodic’ properties, which are very effective for treating this condition. However, it has to be used in controlled quantities. Recent news coverage had covered some hospital cases where people were treated with cannabis and became better. The best example of this is the case of Charlotte Figi who was diagnosed with Dravet’s syndrome. No other medicinal drug could reduce her seizures except cannabis.
Migraines
More than 300,000 cases of migraines were treated in California alone using marijuana after its legalization. The doctors were delighted as well as surprised to see the improvements in patients’ health and were also able to cure some migraines, which conventional medicine could not.
Cancer
Although it is widely known that cannabis helps in curing cancer, certain governments are not too keen on legalizing it, fearing loss in profits by pharmaceutical industry. This is because marijuana contains cannabinoids, which inhibit tumors and also helps in killing cancer cells. It has also been proved that marijuana’s effectiveness increases as it can activate receptors in our own body to fight against cancerous cells. Cannabis/marijuana cancer cure have been proven medically, and there’s no doubt that medicinal benefits of marijuana for treating cancer and seizures are simply unmatched.
ADD and ADHD
Cannabis has been found to be more effective than Ritalin, a drug used for treating ADD, a recent study by USC says. Also, the study concluded that cannabis does not have any side effects and patients were more responsive to cannabis than other pharma-drugs used to cure ADD.
On the whole, cannabis research has been deterred for political reasons, in spite of having positive effects on such critical diseases and ailments. It’s now up-to the governments to understand the benefits of cannabis and its byproducts and encourage legal research and development of drugs using cannabis byproducts.
