Just what is the Difference between an Indica and Sativa?
One distinction which is often made when discussing cannabis is the strain type and whether it is an indica, sativa, or instead a hybrid between the two. But what exactly does this mean?
Cannabis, while a common name, is also the Latin scientific name for the plant which refers to the genus. Within the genus there are three species, C. sativa, C. indica and C. ruderalis. While the third species possesses low THC and often isn’t used for recreational use, it does contain high CBD and is commonly used for hemp. The first two species however typically have much higher THC and lend their names to the two dominate strains often bred and used for recreational use.
Sativa strains physically are much taller plants and can reach up to six feet in height, often produce the thinner seven-pointed cannabis leaves, and have a grassier smell than indica’s. While it can be, plants in this strain can be more difficult to grow inside. In the context of recreation sativa strains are much better for smoking during the day as the psychoactive components keep your mind active, while producing a euphoric, elevating sensation.
This quality makes sativa’s great for treating psychological disorders, and generally elevating ones mood. Examples of this strain include Sour Diesel, Lemon Haze and Jack Herer.
Indica strains by contrast grow to be much more compact, bushy and shorter, and as such rarely exceed three feet. Other members of this species can be much shorter than this and this quality makes them great plants to grow indoors. Again contrasting with sativa’s strains of the indica variety tend sedate the user and are often associated with the “sit on the couch and eat Cheetos” stereotype.
This is a good species to use if you are looking to manage pain or smoke before going to sleep. Examples of this strain include Granddaddy Purple, Northern Lights, and Grape Ape.
