Oregon and Recreational Sales of Marijuana: Things to know

Oregon legislature legalised recreational sale of marijuana for adults above the age of 21 from Oct. 1, 2015. It has been a long journey for those who campaigned for the legal status of Marijuana for recreational use. However things are not simple and there are limitations of the law which you should be aware of and also inform others about it.

What is legal and what is not?

From Oct. 1, 2015, you could walk into a medical marijuana store and buy a small amount of Marijuana for recreational use. However you have to be over 21 and it is still illegal for anyone under the age of 21. You are also allowed to possess up to 8 oz. of usable marijuana in your residence and up to 1 oz. outside your residence. Anything above 8 oz. is still illegal so that has to be kept in mind. Also, for those who like to grow their cannabis, 4 plants are allowed to be grown per residence, privately and outside public view. You cannot consume it in public or take it out of the state. Chances are you will end up on the wrong side of the law if caught with marijuana outside the state limits. We also include Washington in that even if they allow recreational use. You are allowed to smoke cannabis or make edible products and eat them within your residence or within a private property. Driving under the influence of Marijuana is still not legal and will possibly attract penalties and other possible fines. It s up to a recreational user to be responsible and uphold the laws of the society and to make sure that private fun doesn’t extend to the streets and harms others even if it is a remote possibility. Also, making edible products and gifting them within friends is legal now, however the restrictions of indoor usage remain.

Educate yourself and spread the word

Measure 91, makes marijuana legal in the state of Oregon for recreational usage with the above restrictions. Make sure that you thoroughly understand the law and the limits before you go ahead and light one up. Also, as a responsible citizen of Oregon, inform other recreational users aware of the laws and the limits. As responsible consumption of marijuana continues, Oregon surely has turned the corner for decriminalising the act and will have far reaching positive consequences for the society and will reduce smuggling of marijuana and help local hemp growers.
