Is Cannabis a better way to treat Migraine?
Migraine headaches are severely disruptive to deal with. They go and come back without any consent and negatively affect a person’s daily life. The medical community has different opinions on migraine headaches and is continually exploring new ways to treat it. The main challenge that doctors face about migraines is finding the right cause for the headache in a person. Based on the research there are about thirty causes that can trigger migraine headaches.
The popular prescriptions such as Ativan, Valium and other tranquilizers could give immediate relief in the patients but are potent to side effects. Other than these Ergotamine and Demerol injections are given to patients to control severe migraine attacks during emergency cases.
Now medical researchers have discovered a new way to effectively treat migraine headaches. It is found that cannabis can bring relief in the patients who are suffering from long-term migraine problem. The benefit lies in the mildness with which cannabis treats migraine. The side effects are minimal compared other pills that are prescribed over a long run.
A study conducted by Migraine research foundation shows that cannabis reduces the frequency of headaches in a person. The researchers of this institute examined 150 adults claiming to have migraine headaches.
The collected data is as follows:-
- Migraines are suffered more by females and they can increase the risk of strokes
- 75% of the patients were not following a healthy diet and lifestyle
- 93% of patients were following medical prescriptions for more than a year
- 11% of patients had tried cannabis and it stopped headaches
- 13% of patients pointed out that they get fewer migraines per month after inhaling cannabis
- 6% of patients experienced that inhaling cannabis is more effective than edible cannabis
The reason for cannabis being effective on migraine is the stimulation of CB2 receptors and endocannabinoid deficiencies in the body. The best time to consume cannabis is while experiencing migraine symptoms such as aura.
Side effects of cannabis
Cannabis can give fast relief on migraines but has mild side effects such as sleepiness, and intense euphoria. Some subjects in the research were worried about not being able to work at their office after the intake of cannabis. The intake of cannabis should be done with caution as overdoses can increase heart rate, suppress immune system, cause depression, and induce inactive physical coordination. So, it is better to consult a doctor before adopting cannabis as a way to treat migraine.
