The legality of cannabis is changing as it depends on both time and place. In some cities, like Amsterdam, it’s legal to smoke marijuana in public places. While in an entire other country as Japan, it’s against the law to do so.
Before 2015, it was illegal to smoke marijuana, except for specific types, in most of the states in the USA.
While now, after 2015, many states are on their way to legalize the different uses of marijuana.

The United States
As said before, it was illegal to smoke marijuana except for some specific cases. But now Washington DC plus four more states have legalized the recreational smoking of marijuana. In Hawaii and Vermont, the law permitted the use of marijuana medically. But federally, marijuana is still considered as a drug.
Canada
The use of marijuana medically is legal in Canada since 2001. And now, they are working on legalizing the recreational use of cannabis.
Mexico
Mexico has a great problem concerning the drug trade and the power of the cartels. In order to put a limit to these problems, the Mexican government is trying to legalize a number of drugs including cannabis.
Uruguay
Since 2014, cannabis is completely legal. You can get it from pharmacies at 1$ per each gram, you can grow it at home or you can join a grow club to get it.
Spain
It’s legal to smoke marijuana as long as you do it in secret. Public smokers are not punished by jail time, the get a fine of about 350$. So, there are private clubs where marijuana smoking is a legal act.
Czech Republic
In Czech Republic, cannabis is considered as a special drug, and it’s not categorized with other drugs. And it’s legal to smoke marijuana for medical reasons. The possession of 10 grams of cannabis for personal use is okay, but anything above 10 grams can get you a fine of about 550$.
Colombia
In 2012, Colombian law considered the possession of cannabis up to 20 grams legal, but it was still illegal to smoke marijuana. And since December 2016, smoking medical marijuana was decriminalized. Now, they are on their way to decriminalize the smoking of marijuana for recreational purposes. Legalizing the smoking and the possession of marijuana in Colombia is a part of the Colombian war against drugs.
