Cannabis and Brain Cancer: A New Research

Brain cancers kill over 5.000 people every year. A real tragedy, made even worst by the way in which all this people live their personal struggle, a long journey toward the annihilation of the very essence of who they are: their own mind. Headaches, seizures, problem with vision, vomiting, and mental changes are only few examples of the gifts brought by this terrible disease. And if this wasn’t enough, brain cancers are pretty much death sentences. In fact, 90% of people who live with a brain cancer die within 5 years.

Are you feeling upset already? I understand. But wait, there is hope: it’s called cannabis! A recent study published in the Molecular Cancer Therapeutics journal by a team of experts from the University of St George’s London has shown to the world that marijuana can be a powerful ally in the difficult battle against brain cancers.

But let’s get into some details. The active chemicals that “live” inside the beautiful marijuana are called cannabinoids, also known as phytocannabinoids. The list of names is quite long. As a matter of fact, scientists have identified 85 cannabinoids – and they all reside quite happily together in that green paradise called cannabis plant. Two of them, called tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), were the protagonist of this particular research. So, what did they actually found out at the University of St George’s London? A team of experts guided by Dr Wai Liu has discovered that, combining THC and CBD with irradiation, it is possible to significantly slow down the growth of brain tumors.

This is incredible news. As a matter of fact, the research carried out by Dr Wai Liu and his colleagues is the first to show the kind of results the THC-CBD-irradiation combination can help to achieve.

Here is an interesting, funny fact. The fabulous THC, which was one of the main turning points of the research, is also the primary psychoactive component of cannabis. In other words, THC gets you high… while it cures you. Isn’t it fascinating? I look at this as a kind of metaphor, a reminder that health is also a state of mind, a “being” somewhere else, far away from the disease. Well, THC certainly brings you somewhere else, to the most wonderful places!
