Increasing Clamour for Medical Marijuana in the USA

Marijuana has been long used as a medicine by mankind since long. Marijuana as a medicine has either been smoked, or the oil from it has been extracted and applied externally or marijuana has been edible in some form or the other. The medical benefits of marijuana have been recognised by many countries and they have legalised medical marijuana. Medical marijuana is used primarily in pain relief among patients under chemotherapy for cancer or other diseases like HIV, multiple sclerosis and spasticity. It is also used for many diseases like Glaucoma and movement diseases. Apart from medical marijuana, many countries have also legalised recreational use of marijuana under a controlled environment as well. 23 states in the USA have made medical marijuana legal and there is an increasing demand to make medical marijuana legal and available for patients who need it for their pain relief and other diseases.

Political demand among candidates

The want for medical marijuana has also reached the upcoming presidential elections in the US. Many candidates have stated that they are in favour of medical marijuana and are willing to bring in federal laws which will make it possible for patients in need of medical marijuana to get it. The candidates from both the Republican Party and the Democrats have made their stands in favour of medical marijuana and the same applies to those who have made it clear that they do not stand in the favour of medical marijuana. Kentucky senator Paul Rand has been the most vocal among the presidential candidates to publicly support the decriminalisation of marijuana and has made pre-poll promises to bring medical marijuana to the needy. He has also passed a law in the past which allows patients and doctors to participate in medical marijuana programs without fear of federal prosecution in states where medical marijuana is legal.

The need of the hour

Patients who need medical marijuana and activists are being voracious in their demand for medical marijuana being legal across the US. It not only needs laws to bring in the change, it also needs legislation which will allow medical marijuana shops to be able to operate without the fear of state or federal persecution. It should also become easy for them to get loans and operate like any other business facility and grow organically to the point of being just another business sector.
