Marijuana: News From Germany
Something is moving in Germany, and yes I am talking about cannabis legalization. In fact, the green party has recently presented a draft of a law that would allow Germans to use cannabis – don’t get me wrong, the rules would remain quite strict, of course. This is great news for the European citizens. In the last few years after the economic crisis, Germany has quickly become the strongest point of reference within the European Union. Not only it has the strongest economy of the continent, but Germany also represents a great example when it comes to social and cultural issues. This is precisely why legalizing pot in Germany would mean the world to the citizens and the activists who live in Spain, Italy, France and the rest of Europe.
According to the green German party, prohibition has failed in the most spectacular fashion. In fact, cannabis has constantly been, and still is, the most used drug in Germany. While this is “bad news”for those who don’t want people to use pot, it is great news for everyone else. First of all, it means that legalizing pot would open a huge market, which is basically already there: many Germans would get rich, and the strongest economy in Europe would become even stronger. Secondly, it also means that people already accept cannabis as a potentially beneficial plant, which is good – because cannabis is indeed a beneficial plant.
The green party is asking the government to separate cannabis from the rest of the illegal drugs and allow German citizens to open regular, highly regulated, legal cannabis shops. Of course, no underage use would be included in the law, and nobody would be able to carry more than 30 grams for personal use and grow more than 3 cannabis plants. All this would allow the authorities to keep the circulation of pot (and also its quality) under control.
A cannabis tax – around 4-6 Euro – would furthermore guarantee a tax revenue of almost 2.000 millions. That’s insane. The money could then be invested in modern, ecological infrastructures and other public projects. Considering how much the German people care about their landscapes and environment, this would be more than accepted by the citizens.
The day in which the Germans will be able to buy good seeds (http://greenhouseseeds.nl/), grow their own plants and enjoy pot legally is coming, and it could be here very soon.
