A group of people who support the use of legal recreational marijuana have gone on to request the legislators of Massachusetts to put a hold on any sort of decision that is linked to marijuana.
This appeal actually came in during the public hearing that was conducted by the special legislative committee that was formed for reviewing the law, which passed by 240K vote margin and made this place (Massachusetts) one of the 8 states that let the adults to use recreational marijuana.
The House and the Senate authorities have gone on to promise the people stating that they will be respecting the wish of the electorate. Yet, the lawmakers caused tension among the marijuana advocates when they made it clear that they are planning to consider a much higher rate of tax on legal marijuana sales and look into other concerns, which include the ability of the officials to have the pot shops outside their communities, restrictions on potency of edible marijuana and more restrictions on the homegrown marijuana, now limited at one dozen pot plants for each household.
The team that actually let this ballot initiative stated that the legislature must be following the hands-off approach till the time the state regulatory board is actually in place and until the time it gets a chance to formulate some valuable recommendation to the lawmakers. The board that is known as CCC (Cannabis Control Commission) is not yet appointed.
The legislature has further pushed the opening of the marijuana retail stores until the mid of the year 2018. Talking about the other marijuana-related bills that were filed, there are proposals that range from small amendments to law to that of outright repeal. The latter is a highly unlikely possibility. The law even imposes around 3.75% of excise tax apart from the normal Massachusetts sales tax of 6.25% and the optional local tax of 2%, which sums up to 12% maximum tax.
Deb Goldberg, the State Treasurer, whose office is now overseeing the execution of this law, stated that the lower excise tax is actually an area, which is of serious concern. The supporters of the law however counter-argued that keeping the tax rates low during the initial months will actually encourage more number of consumers to buy from the legal and authorized marijuana shops, which will thereby put the illegal dealers completely out of business.
