Oregon Sheriff’s Department Holds Anti Marijuana Convention
Amidst a tense PR battle in Oregon for the legalization of recreational marijuana, the Sheriff’s department in one county held a long informational program about the Dangers of marijuana use. A Kevin Sabet spoke for an hour, sounding a lot like a Physical Education teacher beginning a DARE discussion. It was full of Rhetoric, hopelessly biased and very misleading information about marijuana and was clearly designed to influence voters.
Much of the time Mr. Sabet was speaking, he was creating associations with marijuana and other hard core drugs, such as Heroine and Cocaine. This has been the classification for more than 40 years, and one that Eric Holder intimated at reversing this. Comparing marijuana with cocaine and opium is not fair, since a majority of the scientific literature implies that the plant is not at high risk for abuse unless at very high doses.
Marijuana is Already Medicine
One of the strangest things that they said was that they wanted to actually turn marijuana into medicine. This statement single handedly implies that the medical marijuana industry is a sham, and denies hundreds of studies that show marijuana can be used as medicine. From MRSA to Alzheimers and Brain trauma prevention, to antivirals, anti-tumor functions. It’s a unique plant that also offers a recreational aspect, which is what people are more upset about.
His misinformation was endless. He said that marijuana edibles, including Sodas, cookies, Ice cream sandwiches were being marketed towards children when in reality they are for adults who do not enjoy smoking the plant for health reasons. Most of these products need to be labeled with the THC content, so that users will not overdo it.
Misinformation and Scare Tactics
The program went as low as to link declining math and reading numbers of the United States compared with other countries, hoping to use marijuana as the scapegoat. Unfortunately for his argument, the statistics that he displayed about teen usage showed that things were steady, if not headed back downward.
I cannot find distaste with everything that he said, as he did seem focused on keeping the marijuana out of the hands of teenagers. Especially certain kinds of dabs, which do need to be, studied more because of the high concentrations of THC. There is solid evidence to show that Teens should not use marijuana, alcohol, and many pharmaceuticals that we prescribe them all day.
The speaker, Kevin Sabet, was paid $3000 to speak for an hour at the program, which really is not a high price for one’s integrity. Marijuana helps people every day, and will continue to do so in hundreds of new ways over the next few years. Let Green House Seed Co grows your medicine.
