Cannabis and Violence: A Study Made of Hope
Thanks to the many representations that constantly appear and re-appear in innumerable movies, TV shows, books and websites all over the world, the pot smoker is now a recognizable character standing perfectly within the borders of our cultural landscape. So, who is this pot-smoker dude? Well, he is certainly the product of different rhetorical intersections. He is usually HE, just like criminals in movies are usually males. And of course marijuana is “bad” or “funny-bad”, it’s not sexy, right? Therefore, female characters don’t smoke, unless they are planning to turn into sexually uninhibited beings. Yep, the usual gendered binary: men are bad and funny, like marijuana, women are sexy.
Moving on, the pot smoker is a HE, and he is sleepy and lazy all the time, but occasionally he can turn into a violent person, someone out of control. And, of course, if he smokes a lot he is usually young and stupid. Plus, cannabis is also vaguely exotic, meaning that black people smoke pot… all of them, right? Talking about racism and misogyny: too often the pot smokers represented by the media are extremely problematic characters created by people with extremely controversial, conservative perspectives.
However, thanks to an increasing number of authoritative studies, those who really care about defending the reputation of pot smokers have started to push back against the usual misogynist and racist stereotypes. The health benefits cannabis can offer are too many to be remembered, but health is not the only aspect of our lives that marijuana can potentially transform. In fact, a recent study conducted by researchers in the University at Buffalo School of Public Health and Health Professions and Research Institute on Addictions (RIA) suggests that married couples who smoke pot tend to be less violent. In other words: marriages that include cannabis are characterized by a lower level of violence when compered to “normal” pot-free relationships. And to make the results even more clear, the study indicates that the least violent couples are those in which both spouses use marijuana frequently.
These findings are extremely interesting and seem to suggest pot smokers – both males and females – are indeed able to settle their disagreements without “losing control”. Pot smokers are not only bad-funny men, after all. Actually, apparently it’s a good things if both men and women smoke pot. So, do you want to try and see if cannabis makes you calmer and wiser?
