The Many Ifs and Buts of the Marijuana Philosophy
Going by all the positive medical research, perhaps marijuana deserves to be considered on par with the apple for health efficacy. In fact the apple is certainly not recommended as a cure for epilepsy or cancer. Even if international bodies gave marijuana the green signal, a tug of war would continue like the Federal Laws in USA and the states. Perhaps only those would be prosecuted who flout both Federal and state laws! Besides, countries and cultures think differently and Muslim countries may never condone the use of drugs. Yet in that case what about the thousands who needlessly suffer while marijuana cures do exist!
Smoking, eating and vaping marijuana!
The traditional notion of cannabis joints being puffed away universally does not really apply. Cannabis can be imbibed without the risks of smoking that may lead to lung cancer. Statistics indicate that many thousands perish needlessly from tobacco smoke. Growers, sellers and patients need not smoke it but could eat or vape it. Growers and sellers need do neither of course.
The unique Canada laws regarding medical marijuana
Business looks for greater profits and insurance is a form of business. The Supreme Court of Canada decision applies to patients with legal prescriptions for marijuana and they can use the drug in any form. However insurance companies require them to be declared as smokers as a result of which they pay higher premiums, sometimes double that of non-smokers. Without the smokers clause, insurance claims could become invalid.
What does American law say?
Marijuana related laws in USA differ from state to state and nobody really knows the whole truth. Some states prohibit legal medical marijuana from being smoked and it can be dispensed only as oils, ointments and tinctures. The four American states where recreational marijuana is now legal have taboos too. Meant for those 21 years and older, laws specify the quantity permissible and how many plants can be cultivated if any. Sale is prohibited. Besides, smoking it in public places including indoor cafes is not allowed. You might not be allowed to buy a gun if you have a marijuana prescription. Can you fly with marijuana in the baggage? Probably not unless discreetly done with a prescription.
