Cannabis and Osteoporosis: What do we know?
According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation “osteoporosis is a disease of the bones. It happens when you lose too much bone, make too little bone or both. As a result, your bones become weak and may break from a minor fall or, in serious cases, even from simple actions, like sneezing or bumping into furniture”. Furthermore, “about 54 million Americans have osteoporosis and low bone mass, placing them at increased risk for osteoporosis, and “studies suggest that approximately one in two women and up to one in four men age 50 and older will break a bone due to osteoporosis”. So, basically, we are talking about a disease that affects A LOT of people, something that makes them weaker, and therefore less able to live the life they want. I mean, 1/2 of the American women and 1/4 of the American men age 50 or older will suffer from this: it’s crazy.
I recently went to a conference/panel discussion on osteoporosis and cannabis. It was organized by a group of researchers from the University of Washington. The conference was extremely interesting, also because I had no idea that my favorite – and, I am sure, YOUR favorite – plant was able to help even those who suffer from a bone disease.
But how does it work? Let me tell you. Apparently, recent researches have shown that the activation of the CB2 cannabinoid receptor can potentially slow down bone loss and stimulate bone building. While more studies are necessary to confirm the findings, this is great news and the cannabinoids-world is now considered by the experts as a possible path for the development of new drugs. This, of course, doesn’t necessarily mean that, by smoking pot, you can actually defeat osteoporosis. Or, at least, this is not what the researchers are saying at the moment. Certainly, however, it doesn’t hurt. Once again, cannabinoids are slowly entering the picture and could soon be considered the protagonists of a new way to cure an “incurable” disease.
If this is not enough to convince you to buy some good quality pot, maybe on a website like http://greenhouseseeds.nl/, you should also consider the fact that cannabis can help you relax and be more social, it can cure headaches and nausea, and much more. If you think about it, there must be a reason why dozens of cultures and millions of people have been using marijuana for centuries, right? And I can assure you they haven’t done so to hurt themselves. Well, you do the math!
