First Cannabis Industry Job Fair Held in Anchorage, Alaska

Alaska just experienced the first-ever cannabis career fair, giving a look at how the cannabis industry is implementing tentative measures towards profits and professionalism. On May 30, 2015 (Saturday), Pot Luck Events and Alaska Cannabis Growers’ Association hosted the first-ever cannabis job fair at Pot Luck Events, 420 W. 3rd Street, Anchorage, AK 99501.

This turned out to be a great event to attend for those people who were interested to work in the quickly progressing marijuana industry.

Theresa Collins kept moving between job seekers and prospective employers inside the vast room, which served as the Pot Luck Events venue. She owns a cannabis-friendly company in downtown Anchorage. She worked with the Alaska Cannabis Growers Association to arrange an event to help those interested in working in the industry to get their dream job.

She wishes the new commercial weed sector of Alaska to be mature and law-abiding as it contributes for a good business.

The industry has all kinds of jobs on offer from trimmers, growers, and bud tenders to clerks, administrators, and accountants.

The turnout at this career fair was quite impressive as there were several hundreds of people who stopped by and signed up for job information. Candidates could drop in their filled forms with any one of the three businesses that were present, which also included Alaska Cannabis Staffing. Kyle Houghton, the owner is establishing an employee database and he is looking forward to send candidates to firms that need seasonal as well as permanent staff.

Houghton said, “I gotta build a data-base first, before I have any value to offer employers.” He went on to explain that it was a little early in the process of commercialization to conduct an event like this. He said, “Most of the jobs are gonna come next year.”

The business model of Alaska Cannabis Staffing is not something new; in fact, it’s a cross between a career site and a temp agency. However, it’s based on a robust industry that has not yet come into existence. It’s more of an ancillary business much like equipment suppliers and insurance brokers that stands to gain from what several of them hope to be a rush for green gold.

This is exactly why Houghton selected the business. He said, “I want to be involved without being involved, I don’t want to be heavily regulated.”
