Free Cannabis: Welcome To Washington D.C.

Last Thursday, in Washington, a group of activists gave out 15.000 cannabis seeds…for free. Why? It was a celebration, of course. In fact, marijuana has been officially legal in the capital of the US for 1 month. Basically, a big birthday: is there a better reason to party in the craziest possible ways? And is there a crazier way to party than giving out free pot seeds?

Adam Eidinger, who has been one of the major actors within the cannabis legalization movement, said that more than 2.000 people were present during the celebration, which was planned by his own organization. The organization we are talking about is called DC Cannabis Campaign, and it is the one responsible for creating the law that changed everything, a law that was supported by 70,1% of the people living in the Columbia District.

In DC, cannabis used to be legal only if you needed it for some kind of rare disease. Now, however, anyone who is over 21 can own up to 60 grams of pot and do pretty much whatever s/he wants with it (apart from selling it). And if this wasn’t enough, you can also share up to 30 grams of cannabis and grow up to 6 plants, if you are lucky enough to live in Washington. In other words, any citizen can now go online, buy some nice seed (which you can buy here http://greenhouseseeds.nl/) and then grow his own plant, organically, without using chemicals and without being arrested. That’s sweet!

The seeds were given out in the Adams Morgan neighborhood, which is famous for its more-than-lively nightlife and for the beautiful graffiti that cover the facades of bars and restaurants. The celebration was a big success. People waited in line, everything went according to plan and nothing bad happened. The evening was charming, everybody had fun and the police came around only to help with the traffic: absolute perfection!

Furthermore, because the law doesn’t include the selling of cannabis and seeds, the whole thing was organized as a friendly exchange of goods. Needless to say, many of those who came around actually needed good quality seeds and they were very happy to find out they could have some for free. A beautiful combination of solidarity, knowledge and politeness, without even the smallest traces of violence and/or ignorance.

Because the event was this successful, it looks like we will soon have an encore. You should stay tuned.
