Lou Gehrig’s Disease – A New Discovery

Have you ever heard about the so-called Lou Gehrig’s disease, also known as Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)? If you have never heard about it, you can probably consider yourself lucky.

Let me tell what it is. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, this is a “a rapidly progressive, invariably fatal neurological disease that attacks the nerve cells (neurons) responsible for controlling voluntary muscles (muscle action we are able to control, such as those in the arms, legs, and face). The disease belongs to a group of disorders known as motor neuron diseases, which are characterized by the gradual degeneration and death of motor neurons”. Well…. not exactly the thing you would ask Santa Claus for Christmas. And what are the symptoms? The NIH tells us “the earliest symptoms may include fasciculations, cramps, tight and stiff muscles (spasticity), muscle weakness affecting an arm or a leg, slurred and nasal speech, or difficulty chewing or swallowing” and “eventually individuals will not be able to stand or walk, get in or out of bed on their own, or use their hands and arms”. From bad to worse.

In an article published a few week ago in the academic journal called Neurology, titled Medical Marijuana Utilization and Perceived Therapeutic Value in Patients with ALS, Jacob Kaufman (from the prestigious University of Pennsylvania) claimed that “patients currently using marijuana report a very significant treatment effect on many ALS symptom”. More specifically, the research indicated “21% [of the patients] reported current or prior use of medical marijuana to treat their ALS symptoms. Of that 21%, large majorities considered it very effective in providing appetite stimulation (75%), aiding sleep (65%), relieving anxiety (80%), relieving depression (70%), and providing muscle relaxation (60%)”. Of course, these patients are using good quality marijuana (like the one you can buy here http://greenhouseseeds.nl/) – because, as always, only high quality pot comes with health benefits. Still, these results are quite impressive.

Just think about for a second: look at the symptoms and then carefully examine what cannabis can do for all those (and there are quite a few) who suffer from this terrible disease. We are not talking about a flu or a cold. And the kind of things marijuana can do are incredible. It can give a life to people who are otherwise supposed to suffer until the end of their days. This is justice, this is fairness… this is a revolution!
